A self supported East to West Adventure on the Twin Coast Cycle Trail from Opua
to Horeke. Take 2 Days to meander across the width of New Zealand exploring all
the cultural and historical experiences on the way. Opua to Kaikohe is day one,
taking in the train tunnel, swing and rail bridges and historic towns. Stay the night in Kaikohe then depart again in Kaikohe for the second day, riding through 44kms of awesome scenery
and backcountry to finish down in peaceful Horeke on the West Coast. Trip
departs from and returns to Paihia and Opua.
This cycle trail is predominantly off the main road, an easy gradient and achievable
by most levels of fitness so great for all ages and abilities. All our trips
include high quality mountain bike, comfort bike or electric bike hire (the
ultimate in luxury riding), transport for pick up and drop off, padded gel seat
(to make it even more comfy), helmet, map, repair kit, pump, lock, trail advice
and carrier rack if necessary.
**ELECTRIC BIKE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST FOR ONLY A $50 per person per day.
PLEASE MENTION IN BOOKING**
We do not have pannier racks with side bags as these racks are tricky to move
through the barriers on the cycle trail. We have carrier racks which can take 1
or 2 bags on the rear of the bike.
Day 1- Opua to Kaikohe: Depart from our base in Paihia to get transported to the start of the trail
in the small maritime town of Opua a short distance away. Ride a very scenic
and easy section of the trail from Opua to Kawakawa (11km), following the
meandering river through tunnels and expansive bridges. In the historic town of
Kawakawa, enjoy the famous Hundertwasser Toilets and Vintage Railway running
through the middle of town. Depart again after lunch for 34km of slight uphill
riding before reaching Kaikohe- your stop for the night. On this part of the
trail, see traditional Maori community buildings (Marae), as well as large
swing bridges and farmland. Once in Kaikohe, we recommend visiting the eclectic
old Dairy Company second hand shop, the Pioneer Village and a side trip to
Ngawha Hot Springs! One of the local transport providers may take you out to
the springs if booked in advance. Kaikohe is slowly growing to cater to the
cycle tourists, so get exploring the town before the masses come through! There
are only a couple of dinner options in Kaikohe- the RSA or Thai is recommended.
Accommodation booking will need to be made in advance with secure bike storage.
Day 2- Kaikohe to Horeke Grab a coffee or breakfast from Café Malaahi or one of the tasty
bakeries in Kaikohe and embark on today’s enjoyable 45km ride all the way past
picturesque Lake Omapere on the old Rail Corridor to Okaihau for a rest stop.
Carry on riding down through the beautiful Utakura Vally, following bubbling
streams through backcountry farmland and untouched rural New Zealand. Some of
these sights are 'only in Northland' type views- spot the cows! Stop along the
way for a break at the lilly-pond or at one of the many picnic tables or
patches or grass dotted along the route. Finish your ride on a 2km boardwalk
over the mangroves before a cold drink or brew at the famous Horeke Tavern,
right on the edge of the Hokianga Harbour. It is well worth to continue riding
a further 3km to the Mangungu Mission Station at the end of the Twin Coast
Cycle Trail or a detour to the Wairere Boulders walk. Your shuttle will take
you back to Paihia from here at Horeke unless you feel like staying the night
and soaking up the ambience in Horeke, exploring the Hokianga Harbour by kayak,
boat cruise or hiking at Wairere Boulders the next day.
Day 1 drop off: Paihia to Opua- 10:30am
Day 2 pick up: Horeke to Paihia- 3pm approx.
